A Parent’s Worst Nightmare…

This post was originally published on May 2nd 2019 via Ellacott’s Ramblings.

… Just as we thought we had come to end of this nightmare and when we thought we were finally on the road to recovery, the nightmare came back and far worse than before.

Yesterday (1st May 2019), Charlie was diagnosed with a secondary tumour, measuring 3cm, which is located on his lung. This comes after being told his most recent MRI scan was clean and pristine, much better than his previous scan at the end of September. Something had been spotted on the scan, but it had been dismissed as an effect of the anaesthetic he’d been given. However, it showed up again on his Chest X-Ray and emergency CT Scan was arranged. As Charlie’s oncologist explained to us, angles are important when it comes to scans.

The current plan is to meet with a surgeon at the Royal Brompton Hospital, who specialise in the Heart and Lungs before having Charlie admitted to have the tumour removed. The next course of treatment, following that, has yet to be decided as it all comes down to how well Charlie is doing and whether his body can cope further chemotherapy.

The worst part of the news for us was being told that Charlie is now at high risk for further tumours and as a result, there is a very real possibility that we could lose him. That is the worst news we could have been given at this point and it breaks our hearts to think we may lose him. No parent should ever have to go through the devastation of losing a child. As our oncologist said though, this may just be his destiny as we are all destined to die at some point, some just sooner than others. If that is the case, then I can only thank God for how much joy, laughter and happiness he has brought into our lives.

However, for right now, we don’t want to think that way. There are numerous stories of people coming back and recovering from far worse and we need to hope, pray and fight for that to be Charlie. We are determined, therefore, to keep on living, to keep smiling and making our lives the best they can be, because life is too short and moves too fast to allow something horrific as this from doing so.
