Let’s Bake: Homemade Pizza

My son, Charlie, absolutely loves pizza. It is probably his favourite meal, but the problem with being on lock down and being unable to get the larger supermarkets is that we cannot buy ready made pizzas for him. Being that he needs to put on weight, after having lost a fair amount during his continued treatment for cancer, I knew I needed to find a way to be able to provide him with his favourite foods without worrying about whether or not I could buy them. Luckily, my cupboard already had amount of baking ingredients before it became impossible to buy them. A quick google search for homemade pizza bases led to me to a simple and easy to follow recipe.

My first attempt went well (as pictured above), but it was a lot thicker than I had expected. I realised on my second time of creating the dough needed that I had used too much water the first time round, not that Charlie complained. Now, I am able to create four small thin crust pizza bases out of this recipe, meaning I am able to serve Charlie his favourite meal for lunch every day.

Ingredients: 175g of Plain Flour, 1 1/3 teaspoon of Baking Powder, 1/2 teaspoon of Salt, 1/2 tablespoon of oil, 85ml of water, plus toppings of your choice.

How to Make:

The recipe for the dough was found online. The original recipe called for twice the amount of all ingredients. My aim was to create small and individual pizzas suitable for a simple lunch. Please adjust the recipe accordingly if you wish to make more or create large bases.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 200C.

Step 2: Mix together the flour, baking powder and salt.

Step 3: Add the oil and water and stir until it forms a ball. This should be soft and not sticky.

Step 4: Knead on a floured surface for around 3 minutes.

Step 5: Divide the dough into two and roll into balls.

Step 6: Flatten out one (or both) using a rolling pin.

Step 7: Add chosen topping to the pizza base.

Step 8: Place on baking tray and put in oven for 15mins.

Step 9: Remove from oven and serve immediately.
