I am absolutely certain that nearly every book with cake recipes will always have one for chocolate cake. Makes sense to do so as it seems to be the go to cake for most people. I have not actually tried this specific cake recipe before as the recipe book actually asks for a different type of flour than I usually use.
I would not usually advise changing the ingredients when baking cakes or similar treats, but I thought I would take the chance. My cake didn’t end up looking like it did in the recipe book (does anyone’s though?), but it was still edible and quite delicious. The use of plain flour over the flour that had been listed certainly impacted the bake itself, but it seemed, at least to me, to only impact the thickness of the cake.
Ingredients:
For the Cake: 200g of Butter, 200g of Caster Sugar, 3 beaten Medium Eggs, 200g of Plain Flour, 60g of Cocoa Powder, and 2 tablespoons of Milk
For the Icing: 150g of Butter, 300g of Icing Sugar, 60g of Cocoa Powder and your choice of Sprinkles
(Suitable Substitutes are available for Vegans and those with a Gluten Intolerance)
How to Make:
This recipe is taken, and slightly adjusted, from the Baking Recipe Collection by Sainsbury’s.
Step 1: Preheat Oven to 180C and line two round cake tins with tin liners.
Step 2: Add butter and sugar to a mixing bowl and beat until light and creamy.
Step 3: Add the eggs, a little at a time, beating well after each addition.
Step 4: Add the flour, cocoa powder and milk to the mixture and beat until smooth.
Step 5: Divide the mixture between the two tins and place in oven to bake for 25 minutes.
Step 6: Remove from oven and leave to cool while you make the icing.
Step 7: Add the butter to mixing bowl and beat until fluffy.
Step 8: Add the icing sugar and cocoa powder to butter and beat until smooth and creamy.
Step 9: When cake is cool, use up to half the icing to bring sandwich the two cakes together.
Step 10: Spread the remaining icing on top of cake before sprinkling with your chosen sprinkles.
Step 11: Serve and ENJOY!
